“Satoshi, I swear to god, you look like a cat who’s about to give birth! Will you please stop fidgeting and stay still!” his sister complained in a half-fond, half-smirk smile. Really, Ohno thought, she had perfected the art of ruining his mood and she’d been doing it just to annoy him. He rolled his eyes when her gaze became a little too serious, feeling his cheeks warmed up under her gaze and even though he loves her so much, he felt the urge to strangle her neck in ways that even his mother would never forgive him for.
“ – ‘m not.” Ohno snorted but couldn’t stop himself from giggling silently.
She reached to pinch his nose, grinning. “ – oh, and now you’re acting like a little slut. Gross!”
He wriggled away from her, still grinning cheekily. He had been looking forward to that day almost a month after he transferred to Tokyo… almost a month since he started college and almost a month without seeing Nino.
He sighed deeply, letting the familiar scent of home filled his senses as he threw a glance over his sister who had gone back into burying her face into her book. Mina may be a huge pain in the ass sometimes but Ohno knew how happy she was when he decided to move in with her the minute he got accepted in Keio University Arts Department.
They decided to go back home earlier because of their unexpected week long holiday from school. Mina was set to go home after two days but Ohno convinced her that it was better for them to go home together and that their parents will surely be delighted having their children home for the holidays. Mina accused him of being the resident Mama’s boy and Ohno just give her a playful swat in the arms and stuck his tongue out at her, giggling.
Well, it wasn’t just the reason why he wanted to go back home as early as possible anyway. His sister may have suspected something but she hadn’t said anything and Ohno was thankful for that. A confession may be necessary and he knew he would have to tell them eventually about his relationship with Nino, but he was just a little scared. His family might have accepted the fact that Nino had been a part of his life for as long as they could remember but the truth that Ohno and Nino were in no way bonded by friendship alone was one thing he wasn’t sure they could accept that easily.
But he wouldn’t want to think about those things now. He was going home to see Nino. To feel the familiar wave of nausea hitting him at the thought of finally kissing the younger boy… and of course, to celebrate with Nino.
Because it’s going to be Nino’s 15th birthday in two days time.
They arrived a few minutes after six and Ohno was set to go out to visit his friends, most especially Nino, when someone unexpected knocked on their front door.
Ohno didn’t have any idea that the one person he never had the opportunity to meet would one day show himself up and did something that would change his life forever.
That day Ohno wished never came.
It was actually a lot more fucked up than he initially thought and frankly, he didn’t know whether it was better to let them decide for him or just runaway, as far away as he could the first chance he could get. But he knew he couldn’t. He knew it would be impossible to try and do something that was highly stupider than what he already did.
He shifted his gaze back to his father’s face and Ohno could have sworn he saw something which resembled pain and disappointment passed through his father’s eyes and Ohno again reminded himself to breath just to be able to blink back the tears he realized he kept from spilling out. His mother’s expression, to his amusement, was completely different as the older woman was looking at him with sympathy and understanding and Ohno felt this huge urge to throw himself against his mother’s side and stay there forever.
But in this case, he knew he had to bravely face the consequences of his actions just so he could be able to regain his parents’ trust, but for a price that would probably ruin his life and the life of the one person he treasured most.
He breathed deeply and narrowed his gaze to the person sitting opposite him and his parents. Ohno admired the person’s ability to look so unbelievably relaxed despite the venom he had been spitting out through his words from the moment he arrived until that very second.
Ohno followed the man’s movement, from the time he lifted the cup of tea that his mother had prepared for their unexpected guest, to the time he told them what the reason of his visit was. Ohno never expected it, plus the fact that he had no idea who the man was at first and realizing who he was afterwards had not only made Ohno more confused but it also made him question why the man had to go to such length just to ruin, not other people’s lives, but the life of his own flesh and blood.
“You should thank me, you know,” the man answered, grinning mischievously. “ – because the way I see it, you actually doesn’t have any idea what your son’s been doing behind your back…”
Ohno contemplated on throwing his own cup to the other man’s face in favor of clawing his fingers into a tight ball and clenching his jaw as he stared straight into the other man’s eyes. The man simply gave him a smug smile in return and Ohno very nearly jumped up from his seat with thoughts of wiping that smile away with a punch when all of a sudden, his father stood up while clearing his throat.
“Ninomiya-san,” Ohno’s father called out calmly, “ – they are indeed my children and of course as a parent like yourself, I wanted them to have the best things in life, without worries or without having to experience pain or mistakes …” he paused and Ohno saw how his father had resisted the urge to glance at him. Ohno looked away and braced himself. “ – but wouldn’t it be selfishness on our part if we tried living their life for them and not to let them have~”
“ – I did not come here to listen to your crap preaching, Ohno-san,” the other man simply cut Ohno’s father’s words, shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly. The older Ohno sighed in resignation while their rude visitor seemed entirely unaffected. Ohno felt his anger seeping out of his body like another layer of skin and the only thing he badly wanted to do was to knock the oxygen out of their visitor’s mouth. “ – and I don’t care if you think I’m a bad person. I am not going to sit here and do nothing while my son and your son ~”
He’d heard enough.
“What the fuck do you want?” Ohno grunted, hissing the words out and completely ignoring the fact that he was, actually, talking to a grown up man and not to mention, Nino’s father. He was going to lie, he’s decided, and it would probably ruin his chances of redeeming himself through it but he didn’t care. He knew he had to do something. “ – if you came here just to let my parents know that I am dating your son, then don’t waste your breath. My parent’s are not like you. They know that I am capable of deciding things on my own and that being with Nino was not something they have to be worried about. It’s not like~”
“ – oh, that was unexpected of you Satoshi-kun…” the man grinned. “ – I thought you’re just going to sit on your ass there all night without even saying a single word. Really, you impress me. I never thought you’d have the balls to really admit that you and that stupid son of mine is~”
“ – his name is Kazu and he’s not stupid!” Ohno bit back angrily. The older man seemed surprised at the change in his tone and Ohno could feel his patience running low. Ohno tried pulling himself together, breathing rapidly just to calm his anger down. “ – leave now.” He mumbled in a shaky voice. “ – I don’t care what you think about me and my relationship with your son. As far as I know, you haven’t been a good father to him so I don’t think you have any right to expect him to be a good son to you. The same goes with me. I. Don’t. Know. You. So you better get the fuck out of here before I call on the cops…”
The older man stood up and started clapping his hands, much to their surprise. “ – Impressive.” he paused and then turned, his back facing them as he stroked his chin. “ – too bad because I cannot do that…” he murmured under his breath.
Looking at the older man while he stared back at Ohno with that wild look on his face, Ohno realized the reason behind Nino’s irrational fear over his own father that resulted for the boy being put under his grandparent’s care for almost half of his childhood years. And at that very moment, Ohno could not help but pity the younger boy even more.
“ – you go and threaten somebody else, Ninomiya-san…” Ohno muttered darkly, taking one step forward and ignoring his mother’s plea to stay beside them. “ – and I hope this is the last time you ever~”
Completely ignoring him, the older man shifted his until he was facing them once again. Ohno was torn between throwing the older man outside the house and beating him until he can no longer think.
That was when the older man fished something out of his jacket pocket that made Ohno’s breath caught up in his throat and his mother’s choked cries echoed through the air.
“ – leave my son alone,” he said, eyes half wild and grinning as he placed the gun over his own temple. “ – or he dies.”
